Pandemonium

Sharon from work loaned me the game in the title because her description of what it is confused the heck out of me. It sounded like Mario on crack.

I wasn't able to check out anything at the library today because I have fines and I didn't have time to run back and forth to pay them. Well, more than once.

Librarian: You have fines. You can pay them at the cashier window [5 minute walk through freezing cold].

Zachariah: Okay! [Goes to cashier window, waits in line ten minutes.]

Cashier: Uh, they have to fax me a sheet so I know who/what/how much to charge.

Zachariah: Okay! [goes back to library]

Librarian: Oh, I just sent that sheet 30 seconds ago!

Zachariah: ...thanks for nothing.

I finished copying the old home movies to hard disk. The quality isn't great, but there's really nothing I can do about it. It's pretty hilarious watching my 13 year old self talking about loving Jesus and singing my little heart out. Hilarious and...awkward?

^ breakfast.

I'm retaking two classes I did quite poorly in through prior semesters to bump up my GPA. It won't quite get me to 3.0, but it'll be closer than I am now. What's funny is I still have the textbooks for both classes, but it's been long enough I'm fairly certain they'll be using newer editions. Textbooks suck like that.

Day 1 of returning to proper sleeping patterns has been...unsuccessful. This sort of thing has an unfortunate domino effect in that if I wake up at 12:30 today, I'm not likely to go to bed before 4am tomorrow. Yet tomorrow I must go to the library, burn some CDs, mail things to my parents. Whoo hoo.

I always feel as though I've lots to say, but when I open iJournal I can't think of anything to put down. Perhaps I'll get better with practice.

I'd like to finish GTAIV the Game so I can have more time to play around and kill cops without feeling guilty about not going bowling with Roman. Plus I won't have time to play when classes start. (I'll still play, don't get me wrong. Zach ain't the type to learn from past mistakes.)

I don't really have anything to say today, so here's a slightly older picture of me pretending to be wolverine. You're welcome.

My parents are having difficulty getting high-speed internet. I'm doing what I can, but being 5 hours away doesn't really help. I'll try to mail them the extra router and an extra copy of XP next week, but beyond that I'd pretty much have to be there to do anything.

Our food situation is kind of roller-coaster-y. We go from tons of food when mama Julia visits to bare cupboards any other time. That can't be good.

I'm still feeling pretty good about the new year. Not much time left before school begins anew. I'd better start trying to fix my sleeping schedule.

One resolution for 2009 - get a job than can pay all of my bills. if I can't do that, no other thing I do this year will really help. Besides, I failed every single one of 2008's resolutions, so why pretend I'll have more self control this time around? :D

For Christmas I helped my mom get her first Mac, which was fun to watch. I got an iPod nano and Lego Star Wars for the Wii from Nay and a new programmable coffee maker from Julia, making this one of the best hauls yet. I got Nay....nothing! D: 'cause I was broke, but I did manage to get Super Mario Galaxy for her birthday, which is just as brain-spinny as I remember it being. She started her game all over and I probably will too. Maybe I can beat that and GTAIV before 2010, neh?

Had a mid-break meeting yesterday with my software engineering team to plan out our project for the semester. This "planning" thing sure puts a kink in the "sit down and code" thing. Well. Last semester in school. Lots to do this year.

The car we paid out the butt to fix a few months ago has another major problem that will cost hundreds of dollars to fix. So instead of that, I'm definitely getting into bike riding cold turkey, as I wasn't clever enough to ease into it during the summer. tsk.

I'd planned to only take the last two classes I needed next semester and walk away with a 2.8 and a BA, but with a little more work and two extra classes I can break 3.0, which is flippin' chicken awesome. I hate myself for the past 6 years of sup-par mediocrity and apathy in school, but getting a B average will make up for some of it.

on the roll

I woke up at 7:30 this morning and got up right away. This is pretty awesome (I am in some ways a morning person), but it's pretty much due to the fact that I went right to bed last night. I do not think this will be a trend, alas.

I've used the bike a couple of times, if I can just do it more often maybe my legs will stop burning during rides. ugh, I am old and fat. :D

Again?

I'm hot and fidgety. It comes from having things to do and running out of time to do them. I know this feeling so well. Now that the semester is over and only finals remain, it feels odd to have days off from work in which I don't have class to attend (skip?). If I get a second job, that won't last long, but I've only applied at two places, and I'm running out of time to be a summer contender. Merde. I got a raise at work, so I'm making $9/hour now. That helps a bit, but to really make a dent in my credit debt, a new job really is required. Bah.

And nobody tells Zach. :D

First of all, on Sunday my dad's place of employment exploded. Noone was hurt (he wasn't even there), but the complex was apparently a total loss, so unless Booneville can convince Cargill to rebuild there (nobody knows at this point), 800+ people are out of jobs. In a town of a little over 4000 people. o_0 He (like a lot of people, I guess) is going to hit unemployment for a while to see if they can live off of that, but he's still a good decade or two away from retirement.

Secondly, my older (only) sister got married. Which is good for her, I've not heard about any problems with the man (whose name I don't remember because I've never actually met him). I'm only mildly peeved at not knowing about it because it was a courthouse wedding, so it wasn't really a snub. Of course I only find out about this after calling mom/dad when I read about Cargill burning in my paper. Hrmph.

Oh, and Jonathan's in Kuwait now for a month before going to Iraq.

I'm kind of sad Nay wasn't awake this morning. She'd no doubt have enjoyed watching me giggle like a child as I finally figured out what was causing my program (prg02 in Computer Networks...coding a webserver, very basic) to not work. I refrained (mostly) from bouncing in my chair, but I definitely had a big stupid grin on my face. For future reference, when writing data to a socket, I guess sending an entire string even when it's only partially filled is a bad thing. Who knew? o_0 Anyways, just tying up some loose ends, but I should get full credit for this.

And next week, spring break!

Crap problems.

I swear I'm never buying a "top-of-the-line feature-packed wave-of-the-future" motherboard again. This thing has caused me nothing but grief. After cloning the OS drive to a larger SATA drive and removing the original drive, the SATA OS drive only works when it's the only drive at all. If I connect the master backup drive via IDE, it won't load the OS, never mind the fact they're run with different controllers. Grr!

Every single day I think "This is the day I begin to be serious. This is the day I improve myself." And then everything goes downhill. :D I've spent the last two years learning very little about web programming, even though I was involved in the backend of SNOG!, was the first choice for coding the FFA, and was actually taking classes in database management and OS code. Had I made honest effort to utilize those opportunities fully, I'd be a happy man right now. A company asked my Computer Networks teacher to let his students know they're looking for a full-time web developer with knowledge of the above things. From what I understand, good benefits and salary.

Everything worth doing takes more time than anyone wants to spend.

I've finally decided to just plug our backup hard drive into the PC, since it is far more accessible to Jack and Daniel. For some reason unknown to me, the Netgear thing uses a file format system that Windows alone doesn't read, so if the device ever failed, our data would be inaccessible until we bought a new one. Wait, I think I just figured out the reason. hrmph. Anyways, shoving 80+ gigs of movies onto our other HDDs was extremely sucky, so there had better be an improvement in transfer speeds at the least!

Big differences.

I slept five hours the night before last, then nine and a half last night. I don't like it. One the plus side, I'm on my two day off break. Nay wants to go see John Green whenever he gets close on his book tour. We don't really know details, I guess, so the decision's not really in my hands right now.

I keep fantasizing about winning the lottery, which is stupid on at least two fronts.

Been burning through Transmetropolitan. Can scarcely stop reading; I gotta see what Spider does next. Definitely not a comic book for the squeemish. :D Am about halfway through the series now.

I'm not able to access youtube. Embedded videos work, but the site doesn't. 100% packet loss. Anybody else having that problem?

I'd scheduled my Positive Psychology group meeting for today at the library at 12:30, but when I got there the library apparently doesn't open until 2 on Sundays. Everyone else in the group already knew days ago and let each other know, but somehow my email got lost or something. :D So that was a wasted trip, but whatever.

Tuesday was a freaking long day. Had to make sure my profs knew I'd be missing class and get my assignments, I had to finish my responsibilities to my Biology group, I had to wok, and then we packed up and came to Pangburn. I brought our wireless router, but Nay's old laptop does't have the WEP key and I left the notebook with it at home. I couldn't disable WEP security because I've forgotten the router password and the reset button on it is not working. Finally I remembered OS X has a very easy-to-use internet sharing feature so I'm basically leeching off of Nay's connection right now. :D Somebody remind me to organize all my passwords somewhere.

I played liked two hours of Mass Effect the week I had it. It's official; renting games from Hastings isn't cost efficient. Netflix doesn't do games, as I understand, so I'm thinking about Gamefly. Nay says I should do this and then post some kind of review for what I play. Hmmmm. Not that I'm truly opposed to the idea; I'm just bad at speaking. I wouldn't know what to say. We'll see.

It's been like a little vacation here. 10 hours of sleep a night, free food, just chilling all day. Going back is going to be kind of sad.
